Alabama sheriff shot and killed in the ‘line of duty’

An Alabama county sheriff has been killed in the line of duty following a shooting near a convenience store.

Governor Kay Ivey confirmed County Sheriff John Williams was killed on Saturday night.

She described Mr Williams as a “pillar of the community” and offered prayers and sympathy to his family and the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department.

“Through his service to our country in the United States Marine Corps and his many years working in law enforcement, he dedicated his life to keeping other people safe,” she added.

“He will be remembered as a consummate professional and pillar of his community.”

According to reports, Sheriff Williams was answering an emergency call at the shop in Hayneville, about 20 miles southwest of the state capital Montgomery.
